COMPETITION

Falkirk  3 April 2016

Dancesport Scotland held their latest Competition in Falkirk Town Hall on 3 April. It was the busiest I have ever seen it at Falkirk, so credit goes to all the competitors and their supporters who attended.

I have the privilege of being asked to judge at these competitions usually once a year, yesterday being my seventh or eighth time. Due to the high number of competitors and the high quality of the dancing, I also found it the most difficult competition I’ve ever had to judge. When you judge, all you can do is try your best to make the correct decisions in the very short time that you have available to watch and assess everyone on that floor. It can be a very intense experience.
The Ballroom section took place first of all and myself and the four other judges were judging non stop for two and a quarter hours; the Latin section took less time but not by much. I have to say though that due to the amount of concentration you have to do, the time flies past.

Our only couple taking part this time were Brian Watt and Kathy McGrath Gunn. They achieved a very impressive third position in the Beginners Ballroom and the Beginners Latin sections against some very stiff competition. They were up against four other couples in the Ballroom and five other couples in the Latin.
They also entered the Social Dancers Ballroom and Latin sections but they were the only ones to do so. As a result they had to dance four dances on their own in front of a packed out Falkirk Town Hall with Scotland’s best dancers in attendance. They rose to the occasion admirably though and gave a great account of themselves dancing their routines with absolutely no mistakes. Congratulations Brian and Kathy; you did yourselves and our Dance School proud!!

The next competition is once again at Falkirk Town Hall on Sunday 4 September. I am hoping that we will have a few more couples taking part in this one. Any of you can compete. You start off in Beginners and Social doing straightforward routines and take it from there. It is for all ages, shapes and sizes, and abilities. It’s about getting out on that dance floor and enjoying yourselves. Whether you want to compete or not, these competitions make for a fantastic day out. If any of you want to find out more about taking part in competitions, please get in touch.
