Caroline Coomber School of Dance
Professional Tuition in Ballroom, Latin, Rock 'n' Roll, Sequence, and Belly Dance
Come along and experience the joy of learning to dance at our regular sessions in Elgin and Inverness. Ballroom, Latin American, Classical Sequence, and Rock 'n' Roll are all taught by Caroline Coomber, a Professional Dance Teacher who is a member of the United Kingdom Alliance of Professional Teachers of Dance and an Associate of the International Dance Teachers Association.
Our sessions include classes, workshops, practice sessions, private tuition, wedding tuition and social dance events, medal work, and competition work.
Once a year we hold a Medal Test Day, and we regularly invite top class Professional Dancers to the area to demonstrate and lecture for us. In the last few years we have had Richard Still and Morgan Hemphill; Ben Taylor and Stefanie Bosen; Michael and Lauren Hemera; and AJ Pritchard and Chloe Hewitt (who are now working as Professional dancers on 'Strictly Come Dancing').
Ballroom & Latin Classes for Beginners
in Inverness and Elgin
Tuesday evenings in Inverness, 8pm – 9pm
Wednesday evenings in Elgin, 6.30pm – 7.30pm
These classes are aimed at the complete Beginner. You will gradually learn short, straightforward routines in Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Tango, Cha Cha Cha, Jive, and Rumba, and at a later date we will move onto Samba, Paso Doble and Viennese Waltz.
If you are unable to bring a partner then it is fine to come along on your own. Classes are friendly, welcoming and enjoyable and a great way to exercise and meet new friends.
Please contact me for further details.
NEW! Sunday Practice Sessions in Lossiemouth
New weekly dance practice sessions are at Lossiemouth Town Hall every Sunday from 11am until 1pm. All welcome. We have decided on £5 per person at the moment to ensure that hall hire costs are met but this may be reduced in the future if there is a good regular attendance.
This is being run by Brian Watt and Kathy McGrath Gunn with support from Hakon Soreide and Amina Adamu. I won’t be attending regularly but I’ll probably come along from time to time.
Practice sessions are always very sociable and enjoyable. Practice the steps you’ve learned in class and meet new friends; our more experienced dancers are always more than happy to help you if you forget something. Why not bring along a flask of coffee and some biscuits or a packed lunch? Or go out to lunch afterwards in one of the many fantastic eateries in the Lossiemouth area?
Please contact me for further details.
Sequence Dance Class in Elgin
In this Class, which runs in Elgin on Friday afternoons 12.15pm – 13.15pm, we are concentrating on Classical Sequence but covering Popular Sequence dances too.
Please contact me for more information.
Rock 'n' Roll Class in Lossiemouth/Elgin
Anyone can attend, whether you have tried Rock 'n' Roll before or you are a complete Beginner, we cater for everyone. The steps are very straightforward and lots of fun, and allow you to dance to fast music without getting out of breath!
Please contact me for more information, and next date (this is not a weekly class).
Christmas raffle donation
At our Christmas party the money raised from our raffle came to £160. A huge thank you to everyone who bought raffles and donated all those amazing prizes. Donnie, our wonderful hallkeeper at Green Hall Inverness, sadly lost his wife to lymphoma just after Christmas. Steve and I decided to give the £160 to Donnie for him to donate to Lymphoma Action UK in order to help future patients.
Discount on Dance Shoes and Dancewear
I now receive teacher discount from Move Dancewear. They stock a great choice of Latin and Ballroom Dance Shoes at competitive prices and I can also recommend their Dancewear. Delivery is free when you spend a minimum of £30, which is another great saving. I also receive teacher discount from Supadance, Ray Rose, Freed of London, and International Dance Shoes.
I am happy to order shoes for you so you can benefit from these discounts. All I ask is that if they don’t fit or they are unsuitable, you have the responsibility of dealing with the returns/exchanges.
Medal Tests News
Medal Tests 2020
I am delighted to say that Joan Martin is coming back to be our Medal Tests examiner on the weekend of 17+18 January 2020.
Doing Medal Tests improves your dancing and your confidence, it makes you practice and it gives you something to aim for. All grades are done through the UKA (UK Alliance of Professional Teachers of Dance). The award you receive (a beautiful Certificate and a Medal) is recognised internationally and the UKA do Medal Tests worldwide.
I am hoping that I can give you a date for our Medal Presentation evening very soon. I am currently making enquiries with regard to booking a top British couple to demonstrate for us, do a workshop, and present the medals at the event. I took into consideration all the dates that medallists said were unsuitable so hopefully the date we choose will be convenient for everyone. Please note that tickets will be available for anyone to purchase soon after I confirm the date.

Competitions in 2018
In 2018 we've had a busy year with regard to competitions. We started off at Champions of Tomorrow in January at the Blackpool Winter Gardens; then Falkirk in April and September; and Aberdeen in October.
Well done to all our competitors: Frankie Barton and Kirsteen Fraser; Toby MacDonald Haig and Emily Barker; Brian Watt and Kathy McGrath Gunn; Hakon Soreide and Amina Adamu; Billy Wilson and Margaret Ryan; and Peter Alexander and Joanne Bugden (I hope I haven’t missed anyone out!). You all did us proud at these events.
Peter and Joanne also competed at the Scottish Closed Championships in Glasgow and gave a very good account of themselves, gaining a 6th place.
Aberdeen 28 October 2018
The competition on Sunday 28 October at Aberdeen Beach Ballroom was the busiest I have ever seen it. I am very proud of our six couples who all got good results. Thank you to all of you who came to spectate and to support us.
Falkirk 9 September 2018
Three of our couples competed in Dancesport Scotland's competition in Falkirk. They were trying out new routines for the first time in a competitive environment and all did extremely well.
Falkirk 18 March 2018
What a fantastic day we had at the Falkirk Dancesport Scotland Competition where we had three of our couples admirably representing our Dance School. They were up against some serious opposition but they weren't at all phased and scored a very impressive array of results.
Blackpool 6 January 2018
On Saturday 6 January we had three couples representing us at the Champions of Tomorrow Competition in the world-famous Empress Ballroom at Blackpool Winter Gardens. They did us proud in what is a notoriously difficult event to progress in. They were up against very stiff competition and were dancing in front of around 3000 people.
