COMPETITION

Competitions are open to everyone, whether you have danced for years or are just starting. People of all ages take part, from children to people in their eighties. It is not as daunting as you might think and in fact very exciting, and it gives you a tremendous sense of achievement.

When you feel that you might like to have a go at Competing, please contact me and we can discuss it. You don't have to have been dancing for a long time and you don't need complicated, elaborate routines. Short and simple routines will be absolutely fine. There is something for everyone at these Competitions. Competition at the Beach Ballroom in Aberdeen If taking part in Competitions seems too ambitious but you would like something to work towards, why not try a Medal Test. News

Aberdeen 29 October 2023

Thank you to those of you who braved the weather and came through to support the Dancesport Scotland Competition in Aberdeen Beach Ballroom on Sunday 29 October. It was a wonderful day and I enjoyed judging. I'm always a bit nervous beforehand because it can be quite stressful and you only have a short time to mark everyone on the floor.

In the past we have always used pen and paper while judging and you scribble down all the numbers and results, someone collects your sheet after each round and the scrutineer collates it. So I became even more nervous when I was told on arrival at the event that it was now computerised. However, I needn't have worried as it made the whole judging experience a whole lot easier and it meant that we went through all the rounds a lot quicker and finished around 4pm rather than 6pm. So I am now converted. It's a great system. The scrutineer yesterday was from London and he uses this system regularly in big competitions in England.

Aberdeen Competition 2023 Something that many of you weren't aware of is that we had a couple competing: Jackie Johnston and Logan Drake Boreas. They are a new dancing partnership and it is working out very well. Jackie has been dancing with us for as long as I have been a teacher and Logan has been with us for a year. They did our Dance School proud and danced very well, I am so proud of them, and they won the Aberdeen Ballroom Dance Club Trophy.

Their results are as follows:

1st Adult Social Dancers Waltz, Quickstep (Aberdeen Ballroom Dance Club Trophy)

3rd Open Beginners Waltz, Quickstep

1st Adult Social Dancers Cha Cha Cha, Rumba

2nd Open Beginners Cha Cha Cha, Jive

Fabulous results for their first competition.

John Cunningham Trophy

John Cunningham Trophy I mentioned a few weeks ago that the John Cunningham Trophy in honour of the late, great John Cunningham was donated to Dancesport Scotland by his wife Isobel, to be handed over to the winners of the Open Foxtrot event on an annual basis at the Northern Trophy Day Competition, Aberdeen.

The competition took place on 29 October and Polina Myroshnychenko and Johnny Millar were the very first winners of this special trophy (see photo with Isobel). Each year it will be engraved and handed on to the next winner of the Open Foxtrot event. Slow Foxtrot was John's favourite dance so it is very appropriate indeed.

(John was also my wonderful teacher, who taught me to dance from age 11 and set me on the road to becoming a professional dance teacher for which I can't thank him enough.)

Competition Dates

— Sunday 4 February: Stirling.
I have been asked to judge once again and hopefully we will have some competitors and supporters going along too. I'll issue more details once these are finalised.
